On this point of land, the rivers of the Potomac & Rappahannock parallel and meet the Chesapeake Bay to form what is known as “The Northern Neck”. Embraced and infused with hundreds of miles of shoreline are the counties of Lancaster and Northumberland founded back in the early 1600’s. In this place we call “home”, American history dates back over four hundred years, a history that includes the likes of Capt. John Smith, Robert “King” Carter, George Washington, Robert E. Lee, Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Those who came before make this area so much more than a nice place to buy or build your waterfront home. These are just a few reasons to love this land and its many creeks, inlets, and rivers. Fast forward to the rich history of the steamboat era and on to our current “living” history of dead-rise boats still rumbling to life at 4 a.m. carrying our watermen into the dawn to draw from these waters, with a strength forged from steady, hard work, pots filled with crabs. Back at home, families choose from a selection of fine schools for their children during lazy summer days of bicycles and skateboards, powerboats and wake-skates, and wind billowed sails that carry sun-bronzed kids through villages and creeks reminiscent of Huck Finn and Norman Rockwell. White clap-board churches still ring bells and hymns from their steeples connecting us to the heritage of faith that brought our ancestors to this untamed land so long ago.
